In July of 1960 Lawson E. (Larry) Longstreth and his wife Helen left family and friends in Oakdale, PA for new opportunity in Glen Burnie, MD. With brother in law Glenn Hormel, Larry and Helen were able to purchase the trucking business from L. E. Brown, Catonsville, MD. With that purchase the company was renamed L&H Trucking Company.
During the early years L&H Trucking was providing contract carrier service for P. H. Glatfelter Company located in Spring Grove (York County), PA. The accounts L&H delivered for Glatfelter were in the Baltimore – Washington, D. C. area. During its infancy, L&H Trucking consisted of two (sometimes three) drivers delivering Glatfelter printing paper throughout the middle Atlantic region.
Spring of 1961 was a challenging time for Larry and Helen as they decided to move closer to their primary customer and relocate family and business to the Spring Grove, PA area. That economic time was not prosperous requiring L&H Trucking to develop additional customers in order to continue the business.
Determining that there was appropriate opportunity, Larry Longstreth and Glenn Hormel built a trucking terminal and shop complex near the Longstreth’s home in Heidleberg Twp., PA outside Spring Grove. The facility was completed in the summer of 1962. At that time, additional business from P. H. Glatfelter to their customers in the northeast was acquired. Business began to flourish requiring additional drivers being hired as well as new tractors and trailers purchased.
Another milestone for L&H in 1962 was in its joining the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association. Thereby reinforcing the company’s commitment to the transportation industry and providing its customers valuable consistent service.
In August, 1973 L&H Trucking was incorporated.
As demands of the business changed, Larry and Helen Longstreth purchased Glenn Hormel’s interest in the company in 1975, acquiring all the assets and accounts of L&H (Larry & Helen) Trucking. Business continued to prosper under the couple’s ownership.
The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 deregulated the trucking industry and challenged all motor carriers in that decade. L&H continued to flourish from its location near Spring Grove, PA.
As the transportation industry continued to change, a major competitor from the local area, Cletus Mummert, Inc. was acquired in 1991. Mummert, Inc. had been a contract carrier, as well, for P. H. Glatfelter. L&H was able to substantially increase the scope and size of its company as the Mummert acquisition added intrastate Pennsylvania and New York, New Jersey operating authority. With this acquisition, L&H Trucking was comprised of approximately 45 tractors and 350 trailers.
Approximately two years after the Mummert purchase, Larry and Helen were able to purchase the assets and business of Hanover Transfer. This opportunity provided increased access to additional customers within York and Adams counties as well as new business with container drayage customers to and from the Port of Baltimore, MD.
In 1995, with their company continuing to grow, Larry and Helen Longstreth needed to support their business with the purchase of 25 acres of land on Gitts Run Road, (Penn Township), Hanover, PA. At this location the General Office for L&H Trucking was constructed as well as a 125,000 square foot public warehouse and 16,000 square foot maintenance facility.
Glenn Longstreth, Larry and Helen’s son, took over the day to day management of the company as president in 1997 as the founding couple began to reduce their involvement in direct management of L&H Trucking and its operating entities.
Being in business nearly fifty years the Longstreth’s company, L&H Trucking, has grown to over 700 trailers, 165 tractors, 300,000 square feet of warehousing capability providing quality transportation and distribution solutions to hundreds of customers.
Many aspects of the transportation industry have changed since Larry and Helen Longstreth relocated to York County in 1960. However, their personal values of integrity and honesty continue to be demonstrated by L&H Trucking Company’s relationship with its customers and community.
